Springfield PD's citizens academy begins

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The Springfield Police Department began its citizens police academy Wednesday night.

It's a free 10-week class that takes place once a week at the East Springfield Neighborhood office on Carew Street.

Topics discussed in the class include traffic, narcotics, internal investigations, gangs and crime prevention in the city.

"It informs you a little bit more in detail and sometimes a neighbor could get rob next to you and you wouldn't even know it. And that's one way of finding out what's going on crime wise in the community," said Springfield resident Fred Schubrick.

Wednesday's class was the 36th the police department has organized.
