SHELBY COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - After an E. coli incident in Indiana, you may be wondering if it's still safe to take children to orchards, pumpkin patches and petting zoos this weekend.

There is not an investigation in Kentucky, but WAVE 3 News visited a similar farm popular for family activities.

Somewhere between the hay ride and picking out the perfect Gallrein Farm pumpkin, children make it a priority to check out the petting zoo.

Malia Hurst with Gallrein said the owners recently met with agriculture experts and veterinarians to ensure the health and safety of visitors.

"We had concerns and the first thing we did was contact our veterinarian. And we reviewed our safety and sanitary measures," Hurst said.

A fence and gate separates the petting zoo's premises from the rest of the property. There's also dozens of signs warning visitors to wash their hands immediately after any contact with animals.

"They have hand sanitizer stations inside and right outside the petting zoo. There's also a hand washing station with running water and disposable paper towels," Hurst said.

There's signage highlighting precautions and procedures when feeding the animals near the entrance, exit and throughout the property. KY Agriculture signs are also posted throughout the property to remind visitors to avoid contact with their mouth or food while visiting animals.

Gallrein farm's petting zoo is a must do for parents like Allison Reid. "What better way to learn than come out here and get some hands on activities with the animals. We have to be cautious, but at the same time that's everywhere you go with children" Reid said.
