Girls playing in leaves struck by car; 6-year-old killed

A 6-year-old girl died and her 10-year-old sister suffered serious injuries when a driver crashed into them in Forest Grove on Sunday night.

Emergency crews were called to the 1700 block of Main Street in Forest Grove at about 8:25 p.m. after getting reports of two children hit by a car.

Forest Grove police said the two girls were playing in a pile of leaves that spilled out onto the street. It wasn't clear whether the girls were standing up or sitting or whether they were covered by the leaves at the time they were hit.

Forest Grove firefighters confirmed a 6-year-old girl died in the crash, and a LifeFlight helicopter rushed the 10-year-old girl to a trauma center.

The 10-year-old girl's injuries have been described as life-threatening, and doctors were still tending to her at a hospital Monday night.

Neighbors near the crash scene could be seen crying in the street.

"There have been family members, friends and neighbors flocking to the scene here and offering the family support. [There's] a lot of crying going on and a lot of very distraught people," said Forest Grove police Capt. Mike Herb.

The two girls attended separate schools in the Forest Grove School District. District spokeswoman Connie Potter said grief counselors are being made available at both schools.

The girls' names were released Monday as Anna Dieter-Eckerdt and Abigail Robinson. Anna was killed in the crash.

Forest Grove police said the car was found Monday night, but no arrests were made and no other details were released.

Police said they worried the driver didn't realize he or she hit the children.
