MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Mesa police officers said a metal suitcase found Monday night in a planter contained no explosives, but officers were still trying to figure out what the exact contents were and why the box was placed there.

A person riding a bicycle near 10th Avenue and Country Club Drive found the box about 7:40 p.m., looked inside and flagged down police, telling them he though it contained dynamite with a timer, said Steve Barry of the Mesa Police Department.

Barry said a police robot and officers in bomb suits were able to open the box and found no explosives inside. The "bomb" was determined to be a fake and was destroyed, Barry said.

Barry said it's possible the box was put there as a prank, especially because it's close to Halloween. He said the department gets a lot of strange calls this time of year, and even though some might be pranks, officers must react to ensure there are no real dangers.
