TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

Federal officers seized nearly $4 million in marijuana during the federal government shutdown, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said Wednesday.

During the 16-day period of the partial government shutdown, Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents seized more than 7,000 pounds of marijuana, 10 smuggling vehicles, and illegal contraband in multiple incidents.

Last week, Tucson Sector Border Patrol was responsible for two separate marijuana seizures in excess of 1,800 pounds each. The seizures occurred on consecutive days near Tat Momoli, AZ.

At Tucson Sector checkpoints, agents interdicted multiple suspects attempting to smuggle narcotics and undocumented immigrants into the U.S.

Agents discovered about one dozen undocumented immigrants inside vehicle trunks with no visible means of escape or drinking water.

At the Highway 80 checkpoint, agents discovered nearly 300 pounds of marijuana concealed inside two pallets of cinder blocks on a flatbed pickup truck.
