COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

A large fire at a vacant home spread to several neighboring houses Thursday evening in Covington, leaving 19 people without a home.

It was originally reported around 4 p.m. at a house in the 100 block of Martin Street, just off of Greenup. Upon arrival, firefighters found two homes fully engulfed in flames. Both structures later collapsed.

The fire eventually spread to a third and fourth house. Firefighters were still battling the flames three hours after their arrival. Smoke billowed into the Covington skyline and was able to be seen for miles.

We spoke with a man who made it out just in time with the help of fire crews.

"My daughter pulled up and told me that a house, a couple houses down the street were on fire. I was just watching TV. I'm paralyzed," said Covington resident Melvin Golden.

A firefighter suffered a minor ankle injury. No other injuries were reported.

Electric lines falling on the fire trucks made fighting the blaze even tougher, according to officials at the scene.

The Red Cross was called to provide food and shelter for those displaced in the fire, but can only do so for two nights. The organization says they also provide information to families about other organizations who can step in once their assistance runs out.

Non-profits like the United Way and various food pantries, however, are always in need of donations.

Fire officials say the cause of Thursday's massive blaze remains under investigation.
