NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Tennessee State University celebrated homecoming with a parade down historic Jefferson Street on Saturday.

The parade route returned to the corner of 14th Avenue and Jefferson Street this year. It had previously been moved for 2012's Centennial celebration to accommodate larger floats and crowds.

Yusef Harris, owner of the Alkebu-Lan Images bookstore, and the business community are happy about the parade's return, because the event is mutually beneficial for the school and the business community.

"This annual event fills all of us, not only the business community but the community at large, with pride," he said. "It is a piece of our tradition and history, and we are glad to see it back where itbelongs."

This year's homecoming theme, TennesseeState University: New Century, New Direction for Excellence, recognizes the school's more than century-long history while looking toward the future.

TSU was established as a formal university in 1951, but has been serving students since 1912.

At least 10 marching bands took part in the two-mile route through the community that has supported the University for the past 50 years.

TSU's new President, Doctor Glenda Baskin Glover, who was recently inaugurated, served as grand marshal of the festivities.
