Police: Robbery suspect crashes 2 vehicles in chase, arrested looking for food

FOREST PARK, OH (FOX19) - A man's crime spree came to an end on Saturday after police arrested him looking for food in a Forest Park home.

Shawn Ross, 34, was initially wanted for robbing a Meijer store in Fairfield. After officers spotted Ross's vehicle on Friday night, Ross led police on a car chase.

"He was going northbound in the southbound lanes in oncoming traffic. He was driving quite recklessly, quite erratic. We ended up on Kemper Road after he drove over a sidewalk and some grass to get to the roadway," said Forest Park Police Sgt. Patrick Carr.

Authorities pursued Ross's vehicle northbound on Winton Road. Officers say the pursuit ended in the 1400 block of West Kemper Road after his vehicle stuck a police cruiser.

"He turned into me and struck the front of my car and after he struck me our two vehicles came to final rest against a stop sign and a curb. That disabled his vehicle and he couldn't go any further," said Carr.

After the crash, Ross fled on foot and ran into a nearby apartment complex. Officers say that Ross located a mother and her 10-year-old son getting into a minivan in the parking lot of the complex. Police say that he pushed the 10-year-old out of the way and forced the mother out of the van. Ross stole the van and fled the area.

After another short chase, police say that Ross crashed the van on West Kemper Road just east of Hamilton Avenue. Officers say that Ross fled on foot into a wooded area near the scene of the accident.

Ross was able to elude police for several hours.

Officers later received reports of a man breaking into a home in Forest Park. The woman living in the home, Carol, tells police that the suspect said he was looking for food. Officers were able to find the suspect, identified as Ross, nearby.

"He was standing there with a rock and he was chipping at the window. My first reaction was I got upset and I got angry with him and I started yelling at him saying what are you doing and he said I'm sorry ma'am I just wanted to get some food I'm hungry. I said you didn't have to break through my house to do that and I said I'm calling the police," Carol explained.

Ross has been charged with robbery and fleeing and eluding.
