LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE)- The man caught on surveillance, who police said is a person of interest in the theft of nearly $25,000 worth of rare Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, insists it's all a misunderstanding.

Last week, the Franklin County Sheriff's office released security tape from an Elizabethtown liquor store, of a man store owners said tried to sell them cases of Pappy Van Winkle 20 year bourbon.

Bardstown High School principal Chris Pickett said that is him on the security footage, but insists he had nothing to do with the theft.

Pickett's attorney, Doug Hubbard, tells WAVE 3 News that Pickett is a collector of bourbon, and was looking for bottles of Pappy to add to his collection. Hubbard said Pickett left the store after he could not find a bottle.

Pickett and his attorney will meet with law enforcement Monday afternoon to answer questions police may have.

More than 200 bottles of the prized bourbon were stolen from the Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfort on October 15. The bottles retail for $120, but can be sold for nearly ten times that price in auction.

At the Silver Dollar bourbon bar in Louisville, a two ounce pour of Pappy Van Winkle 20 year is $45.
