SLOCOMB, AL (WSFA) -

The search is over for a woman accused of stealing a south Alabama police chief's patrol car Tuesday. Slocomb Police Chief Don White says 24-year-old Tiffany Buryn was arrested in Holmes County, FL around 5:00 Tuesday afternoon.

Buryn is accused of stealing White's unmarked 2012 black Dodge Charger around 10 a.m. on Middle Street in Slocomb.

According to the police department, Chief White and another officer were on patrol investigating burglaries and looking for suspects when they stopped a vehicle because the driver was acting suspicious.

Investigators say after pulling over the vehicle, a male driver and female passenger tried to escape. They were also said to be throwing narcotics.

Police got the female under control and handcuffed her, but she tried to escape again. Authorities again brought the woman under control and handcuffed her with her hands behind her back.

Chief White then put the woman in the backseat of the patrol unit, with the vehicle running so the air conditioning would work.

Authorities say as officers were trying to get the suspects' car hooked up to a wrecker, somehow Buryn was able to get her hands to the front of her body, jump into the front seat and drive off in the chief's vehicle.

Geneva County Sheriff deputies were in the area and were responding to the scene when they passed the suspect traveling the opposite direction at a high rate of speed. They attempted to pursue the woman but lost her as they were turning around.

Multiple agencies in Alabama and Florida searched for the woman, who has outstanding warrants in Houston and Geneva counties as well as Washington County, FL.

A statewide alert for the suspect and missing patrol car was issued and a search perimeter setup. Authorities ultimately found Buryn hiding in the closet of a house in the Bethlehem Community in Holmes County, FL.

Following her arrest, the woman took authorities to the area where she'd abandoned the patrol vehicle.

Authorities haven't released the exact charges Buryn now faces in Slocomb but say the investigation is ongoing. The car Buryn and the man were originally in was possibly stolen, according to police. If that's true, the man could also face charges.
