No One Knows When It'll Blow

Volcano gets a big crowd, but no one knows when it'll blow

Mount St. Helens may take weeks to erupt. Scientists may lower the alert level to reflect an eruption is possible, instead of imminent. Tourists flocking to the mountain are eager for a glimpse of an eruption. The US Geological Survey says a second, long tremor early Sunday and an increase of volcanic gases suggest molten rock is on the move inside the mountain. One researcher says eruptions probably won't stop with only steam explosions.

Scientists don't expect anything close to the devastation of the May 18th, 1980, blast, which killed 57 people. The main concern now is ash damaging aircraft engines and the surfaces of cars and homes.
