ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
The widow of a World War II veteran got help from some local vets after someone stole an American flag at her husband's gravesite at the Roselawn Cemetery in Athens for the third time. This summer, Louise Griffin had a flag raised at the gravesite of her late husband, Cornelius. Two times before, someone had stolen flags from the veteran's resting place. She came back three weeks later and discovered it had happened again.
"The flag was gone. Oh, it made me feel real bad. I couldn't believe it. But, it actually happened,"Griffin said.
People with the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives in Athens heard about what happened and decided to help.
"It's a disgrace. I don't know what they think they're doing, if they think it's funny or they think it's a game. But, this is a veteran, and to steal a flag off somebody's grave, if that's what's happening, is a slap in the face to every veteran out there," said Sandra Thompson, Director of the Alabama Veterans Museum.
The group took action and replaced the flag. Tuesday morning, veterans from Post 21 raised it in memory of Cornelius Griffin.
"There should be no veteran, especially one of the greatest generation, without a flag on his grave on Veterans Day," Thompson said.
Griffin said says she was humbled by the honor given to her husband.
"I tell you, it's just...the pride, you know. Just to know he was thought of so much, you know. For what he did, you know, in service," Griffin said.
Mayor Ronnie Marks said the Athens Police Department has been keeping a closer eye on the Roselawn cemetery since the last flag theft happened at the end of July.
