Portland high school votes same-sex couple to homecoming court

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Cleveland High School students broke down barriers this month by electing a same-sex couple to the school's homecoming court.

Laurel Osborne and her girlfriend Sophia Schoenfeld were chosen by classmates to be homecoming princess and princess. Osborne and Schoenfeld said their classmates didn't make a big deal out of it and that it seemed normal for their fellow students to vote for them.

Each class at the school nominates six people for the court, and Schoenfeld and Osborne were picked as part of the senior class.

There is no vote for homecoming king and queen at Cleveland High School. Instead, members of the court do a relay to see which couple wins the titles.

While they didn't win, Osborne and Schoenfeld said they loved being a part of the homecoming court and riding on the royalty float during the homecoming football game.

"At first, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I thought, 'That's cool.' But there was an article written about it and it was really cool when I noticed how much of an impact it had," Schoenfeld said. "A lot of teachers came up to us and said, 'Congratulations, it's a really big step.'"

"Everyone in our class congratulated us and was super excited about it," Osborne said. "We were so happy to be nominated."

Cleveland High School's principal told the school newspaper that the vote "speaks volumes" about the students at the school.
