GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The parents of the man accused of killing five people before turning the gun on himself said he called them before he committed suicide.

Pam Sweatt said she got the call from her son Bryan around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

"He told me and his dad that he was sorry for what he's done," Sweatt said. "(He said) he loved us and we kept on asking him, 'Bryan, what have you done up went and done?'"

Sweatt said she and her husband pressured their son to tell her what happened, and they said he eventually told them, "Yeah, I killed someone."

Sweatt said her son snapped Tuesday night. She said that what led to the shooting was likely a custody battle over the seven-month-old daughter he had fathered with one of the victims, Chandra Fields.

The Sweatt family said, despite Bryan's criminal past, they never thought he would kill.

The Sweatt family said they're extending their thoughts and prayers to the family of the victims.

"I can't help what our son done," said Pam Sweatt. "I mean, it would never cross my mind."
