Cincinnati Zoo levy passes for another 5 years

HAMILTON COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - After an extensive campaign, Cincinnati voters sided to extend the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden's 5 year tax levy.

The levy, which was officially listed on the ballot as Issue 2, will provide property tax support for the Zoo for five years (2014-2018) and will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $10.60 per year.

The zoo levy is currently only 20 percent of the zoo's annual budget, down from 41 percent in 1993.

According to a 2012 study from the University of Cincinnati Economic Center, the Zoo has contributed $143 million to the local economy. The zoo generates over 1,700 jobs with $42.7 million in household earnings.

Levy funds can be used only for feeding and caring for zoo animals, for horticulture needs, and building and maintenance repairs.

The levy approved by the Board of Hamilton County Commissioners would generate approximately $6.7 million annually for the next five years.
