Governor, Atlanta mayor and Braves meet at Capitol

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Gov. Nathan Deal, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and a representative from the Braves met at the state Capitol Wednesday morning to discuss the team's planned move to Cobb County.

"It was mainly just an opportunity for the mayor to sit down with them and discuss very, very briefly what their plans were and some idea of a timetable," said Deal, who said the meeting lasted only 10 minutes. "That was really all that happened this morning."

The Braves announced on Monday they plan to build a new stadium at Interstate 75 and Interstate 285 in Marietta. The announcement came after the team failed to reach a deal with the city of Atlanta to remain at Turner Field.

"My thoughts are I'm glad they're going to stay in Georgia," said the governor. "We want to make sure that happens."

The new site will require roads and ramps to be built so fans can access the stadium. It is scheduled to open in 2017.

The governor said the state has not been asked to provide funding for the stadium.

"I've heard no discussions about that," said Deal. "I've seen no plans. No requests have been made to the state and I think it will be that way for a very long time."

Neither the mayor nor the Braves organization would comment on Wednesday's meeting.
