New video shows bus collision in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

The Connecticut Department of Transportation released new surveillance video from the bus that collided with the police cruiser in New Haven and injured 24 people, including a police officer.

The video gives us a glimpse into what happened; however, it may still be weeks before we learn exactly how it occurred.

Two police cars were responding to an assistance call by an officer at Union Station and were both traveling on Elm Street when it approached the intersection of Temple Street.

Police said the first cruiser made it through the intersection successfully, but the second police car, which was being driven by Officer Victor Herrera, a 19-year veteran of the police force, slammed into the CT Transit bus that was in the intersection.

The impact was so great that the cruiser's air bags deployed as the vehicle was launched into a concrete pillar in front of the United Church. The bus continued traveling, jumped a curb onto the New Haven Green, hit a lamp post and stopped.

Police said 23 people on the bus, including the driver, were all brought to local hospitals. Officials said that preliminary information from officials at the scene said most if not all of the people helped at the scene were brought to hospitals for non-evident injuries.

The bus had eight surveillance cameras rolling when the impact happened in the intersection. In the video released Wednesday, the impact happens while everyone is caught off guard and thrown around the bus.

Eyewitness News has learned that the state bus driver has returned after the results of a standard drug and alcohol test came back negative.

At least two of the passengers have talked to an attorney about legal action.

"In a case like this, when the injured parties are passengers, they're never at fault and so we can always submit a claim from them," said the two passengers' attorney, Gayle Sullivan.

Before any lawsuits are filed, Sullivan said they will wait to see who is at fault. It appears from the video the bus had a green light. Police said the officer had his lights and sirens on. There is also a UPS truck parked on the corner which could have blocked the view for each driver.

The crash remains under investigation, and officials said the investigation could take weeks. Police want to talk to everyone on the bus and the officer and continue to analyze what they collected at the scene.
