(WMC-TV) - A sheriff is under fire for allowing inmates to be released under special circumstances.

The inmates were being released in Alcorn County, from the jail in Corinth. He apologized for his decision.

"I let him go that was my fault. I take full credit for it. We will correct it. It won't be done anymore," said Sheriff Charles Rinehart.

Rinehart is in trouble for giving state inmate William Whitaker a pass to visit his sick mother who lives across the street from the jail. Whitaker, who was convicted of robbery burglary and aggravated assault, was in bad health and died the next day at his mother's house.

"He would have come back and everything would have been fine, but unfortunately Mr. Whitaker died," said Rinehart.

Rinehart notified the state. The state investigated and found five other inmates Rinehart had given passes to that were not eligible for them. They were behind bars for crimes like armed robbery and one for manslaughter.

The letter from the commissioner of the Department of Corrections says the findings are alarming and in not in the best interest of public safety.

Because of these findings the state of Mississippi has stopped sending inmates to Alcorn County. There are currently around 345 state inmates in Alcorn County.

The state pays Alcorn County to house its inmates. The county gets around $4 million a year from the state.

Rinehart says he was being compassionate when he gave the ineligible inmates passes.
