SIMPSONVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Two accidents in a short period of time closed a section of Interstate 64 East in Shelby County Sunday morning.

The first was a non-injury rollover in the eastbound lanes of I-64 at mile marker 26 near the Shelby County and Jefferson County line.

"Weather played a role in the first accident," Simpsonville's Fire Chief Ronnie Sowder said.

The second happened just before 7:30 a.m. as emergency crews responded to the scene of the first crash when a car rear-ended a fire truck from the Eastwood Fire Department.

The Simpsonville fire chief said the truck was responding to a non-injury accident when it was rear-ended by a Dodge with two people inside.

The two passengers in the Dodge were trapped inside the vehicle. Sowder explained firefighters had difficulty rescuing the men. They were transported to University Hospital with critical injuries.

Three firefighters were also taken an area hospital. "They were transported to Baptist East for precautionary measures," Sowder said.

At 9 a.m., traffic was backed up at least two miles behind the accident.

Crews reopened the interstate at 9:30 a.m. after clearing the scene.
