RVA feels impact of Midwest tornadoes

The Midwest tornadoes are also having an impact on people in Richmond- most importantly, those trying to reach loved-ones affected by the severe storms.

Over at Richmond International Airport, a delayed flight from Detroit arrived Sunday evening. Christine McKenna and her husband sat through long delays, as the storm rumbled through.

"Before they closed the (plane) door, the wind was blowing so hard, the rain was actually coming into the plane," said Christine McKenna. "You could see that the wind was really strong… We were just as happy to sit on the tarmac a little longer before we took off."

Others waited at RIC for hours, as 12 flights from Richmond to Chicago were canceled. Another dozen flights were significantly delayed, according to the airport's  spokesperson Troy Bell.

Ronnee Taylor has waited five hours for her friend's flight to take off. If it was canceled, she'd have to drive him back to her home in Northern Virginia.

"He finally got on a standby flight, which hasn't left yet. And now we're just waiting to make sure he takes off," said Taylor.

Besides people waiting at the airport, Richmond's Red Cross is also waiting. Red Cross officials say they're on standby and will probably learn Monday whether or not volunteers from RVA will need to be deployed.

"We're used to these types of calls, and our volunteers stand ready. We have volunteers who are on call to deploy at a moment's notice," said Jonathan McNamara of the Richmond Red Cross.

McNamara says the Red Cross is ready to help those in need in the states, despite overload from the recent typhoon in the Philippines.

"This is what we train for. This is why we recruit thousands of volunteers across the country to be able to respond to disasters around the country," continued McNamara.

Currently, the Red Cross chapters in the Midwest are assessing damage, and getting the basics to victims- food, shelter and first aid. More notice will be given tomorrow on how other areas of the country can help.
