OCONEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Three bear cubs that were found on the side of the road in Oconee County earlier in 2013 have been released back into the wild.

The bears, named Bennie, Jerry and Carrie, spent the last eight months at a bear rescue facility in Tennessee before they were released last week.

"This was absolutely the best outcome for these bears, for them to come back to South Carolina and be released into the wild," said Richard Morton, black bear biologist for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. "Our best hope is never to hear from them again."

Firefighter Brandon Poole found the bears while he and his family were traveling along a road in Oconee County in February when they noticed the box alongside the road with the trio of cubs.

Bennie and Jerry were taken to Appalachian Bear Rescue soon after they were found, but Carrie was taken to Charles Towne Landing in Charleston for extra care before she was reunited with her brothers in Tennessee.

The bears were tagged for future identification before their release.

The DNR said the two male bears weighed 105 and 114 pounds, and Carrie weighed 90 pounds at the time of their release.
