Franklin Co. dad says school called DCS about ill daughter

ESTILL SPRINGS, TN (WSMV) -

If a child gets sick at school, naturally teachers will call a parent. But when officials at one school couldn't reach a dad right away, they called the Department of Children's Services. Now, that father in Franklin County wants to know why.

When Leonard Acord missed the phone call that his daughter, Meadow, was ill Monday at Rock Creek Elementary School, staff members tried contacting the family's emergency contact, who offered to pick her up.

But when that didn't happen, administrators sent the girl back to class and made another call, this time to DCS.

"When I go to the school, I was a little upset. I went into the school and asked who was threatening to call social services, and at that time the principal said they were," Acord said.

Although Acord had come to get his sick daughter, he says the principal was concerned he didn't respond in time.

"She said it was in their policy to call [DCS] in case of an emergency. Well, getting sick and throwing up and the child being put back in the classroom is not an emergency," Acord said.

DCS confirms to Channel 4 News they did investigate Acord after receiving a call but found the children were not in any danger, and a case worker told Acord Wednesday they found no wrongdoing.

Acord said he has never had a problem with the school or with DCS, but he is now worried this will be on his record and thinks the school overreacted.

Superintendent Rebecca Sharber says she wasn't aware of this specific case but is sure the school followed policy.

"I'd rather them reconsider their procedures and come up with a better plan than just calling social services," Acord said.

According to the Franklin County School System's illness and accident policy, in the event of serious injury or illness, the school is to contact the parents until they can be reached.

They then have to let the parents know if they need to pick the child up at school or meet at the hospital.

Nowhere is there a procedure to call DCS.
