Evansville family celebrates National Adoption Day in the courthouse

For the first time on Thursday, the Indiana Supreme Court allowed cameras inside the Vanderburgh County Juvenile Courtroom.

That's because nine families are officially adopting 17 children in celebration of National Adoption Day.

Judge Brett Neimier presided over the adoptions Thursday morning.

One special family, the Herraras, have been waiting nearly a year to adopt their son, Mike.

Amy and Ethan Herrara have been foster parents to nearly a dozen children, but never adopted before.

Mike stayed with the family for just three days, and in those three days, Mike decided they were the family for him.

Any told 14 News she had 20 minutes to decide if they were going to adopt Mike. She said it was a no brainer.

"It's amazing. There are some kids that they just sort of click with your family, they come and they stay and you just wonder how you ever lived without them or how they ever lived without you," said Amy. "That's Mike. He's our kid, he's our family. He fits right in, like he was always here."

The family spent the rest of the day celebrating.

Officials say there are about 100 children in the foster care system waiting to be adopted.
