Woman charged in N. Ky. funeral cost scam

NEWPORT, KY (FOX19) - A woman was arrested on multiple charges Friday after police say she allegedly ran a funeral cost scam at area businesses.

Tara Harmon, 28, originally of Cynthiana, Ky., was charged with two counts of unauthorized use of a credit card and theft by unlawful taking from a building.

Police began receiving reports of a female suspect entering businesses and pleading to allow for donations to pay for the funeral of a deceased relative. While the business owner listened to the woman's story, police said she stole the employee's credit cards and cell phone.

It was reported at a business on Monmouth Street in Newport as well as UDF in Bellevue. Detectives were able to track down leads associated with the suspect's vehicle and UDF store surveillance where a stolen credit card was used to identify the suspect. According to police, a family member stated the suspect was Harmon.

Harmon was arrested by Newport Police on Friday for outstanding warrants. According to authorities, she reportedly confessed to the thefts which she claimed were to support a heroin addiction.
