Crews responded to a large fire on Kenard Ave, near Spring Grove, this afternoon. There are no injuries after the fire happened around 4:30 p.m. at Ali Motors, a used car garage in Spring Grove Village.
Owner Ali Ahmadi was working on a vehicle in the garage when the light he was using tipped over, falling on to some spilt gas. Ahmadi said the gas immediately ignited and that flames spread so quickly that the fire extinguisher he used did nothing to diminish the blaze.
"Upon our arrival there was heavy, heavy fire throughout the building, heavy black smoke in the area," said district fire chief Marc Monahan. Smoke from the fire was so substantial it could be seen from I-75 near the Mitchell Ave exit.
There were multiple small fuel and oxygen tank explosions due to over pressurization from the heat of the fire, posing additional hazards to crews battling the blaze. The bulk of the fire was knocked down in approximately 45 minutes. The garage was a total loss with building and content damage is estimated at $200,000.
The vehicle the mechanic was working on is completely burnt up, and the Fire Chief Monahan predicts there is smoke damage to the other five vehicles that were inside of the garage.
