BOONE COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -

A Boone County Sheriff's cruiser stolen early Monday morning ended with one man in custody and another in a SWAT standoff and self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities said Joshua Grizzell, 27, and Shane Byrd, 27, both of Booneville, Ky., were on the side of I-71/75 and stated their car was broken down. They were later spotted searching a grassy area with flashlights. Officers began questioning the two men and placed Grizzell in the rear seat of a cruiser while speaking with outside with Byrd.

According to police, Grizzell shimmied his body through the plastic divider and stole the police cruiser. It happened around 3 a.m. near mile marker 174 on the northbound side.

Grizzell got off the highway at the Richwood exit (MM 175) and then abandoned the vehicle on Carbon Way, just off of Shoreland Drive. The squad car has GPS which enabled authorities to find the vehicle almost immediately.

According to police, the suspect stole a locked shotgun in the process.

Deputies began searching the entire Richwood area for the man. Police believe Grizzell hid in a wooded area until approximately 9:30 a.m. when he reportedly tried breaking into a residence in the 500 block of Maher Road.

Grizzell was eventually located and surrounded by authorities, including a SWAT team, while lying in a ditch with the shotgun. Police said a negotiator spoke with him for about 30 minutes before Grizzell reportedly shot himself in the chest.

He was flown to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. His condition has not been released.

Grizzell's companion, Byrd, was charged with three counts of first degree possession of a controlled substance for Oxycontin, cocaine and heroin, one count of possession of Vicodin, and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.
