SPRINGFIELD TWP, OH (FOX19) - Eight people have been hospitalized as a cautionary measure following a meth lab explosion in Springfield Township.
Fire crews received reports of an explosion around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the 8300 block of Jadwin Street.
Crews arriving on the scene say a man came running out of the house.
"An individual did run out of the house, where he was approached by four police officers that tried to render aid to him. He did state to them that there was a methamphetamine lab in the house," explains Rob Bowder, Assistant Police Chief of Springfield Township.
Officers say that firefighters put out the fire and a specialty team was called in to clean up the hazardous materials.
Authorities say that four police officers, two firefighters and one paramedic from Springfield Township were transported to UC Medical Center following the incident. Officers say the six emergency officials were transported as a precautionary measure to ensure they were not exposed to any dangerous chemicals used in the production of methamphetamine.
Officers also say that the resident was transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries. The extent of his injuries is unknown. However, officers say that the home sustained heavy damage from the blast.
"This is the first incident in Springfield Township we've had of this nature, involving this type of operation," explains Bowder.
Charges are currently pending against the resident.
