Fmr. middle school coach takes plea deal in sex abuse case

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) - A former volunteer football coach facing charges of sexual abuse accepted a plea deal Thursday in Kenton County.

Thomas Hansman, 27, pleaded guilty to using electronic communications to induce a minor to engage in sexual activity. He was arrested on Aug. 21 accused of sexually abusing a young girl.

Investigators said in court Hansman and the victim exchanged more than 2,000 text messages.

As part of the plea bargain, the first-degree sex abuse charge was dropped. Asst. Commonwealth Attorney Katherine Bumgarner recommended a five year prison sentence. The final sentencing is scheduled for January.

Hansman is a former volunteer middle school football coach for Holy Cross. Following his arrest, the Diocese of Covington released a statement saying that Hansman was immediately removed from the volunteer position following the incident.

He will be required to register as s sexual offender upon release.
