VERNON, CT (WFSB) -

A 28-year-old man was arrested by Vernon police after they said he stole food from a Stop & Shop as well as a Salvation Army donation bucket.

Police said Brandon Martin, with no address, stole a sandwich, bag of chips and something to drink. The value of the items was $9.34 and he was apprehended by the store manager.

At the time he was apprehended, he was in possession of the Salvation Army bucket, and the manager took it from him and locked it in a safe inside the store.

The manager then called Salvation Army officials to let them know what was occurring, and at the same time Martin is accused of finding another store employee, who was unaware of what was taking place, and convinced that employee to get the bucket and give it back to him.

Martin then fled the store.

Police were called and they said they located him on Berger Road, which is a short distance from where the incident began.

According to police, he was still in possession of the locked bucket, a Salvation Army uniform and a bell. He was also found with $16 that wasn't in the bucket.

Police said Martin admitted to them what he did, and the $16 was from people donating money that handed it directly to him, and not into the locked bucket.

He was charged with larceny and was expected to appear in court on Friday.

He's being held on $500 bond.
