LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A family that went missing for two days in northern Nevada was found safe on Tuesday

Survival experts at the Zombie Apocalypse store in Las Vegas say a disaster could happen in an instant, leaving people without food and water.

"Hurricane Katrina is the perfect example. There's so much going wrong and all at once that you can't depend on the government or first aid to get to you immediately," said survival expert and store manager Cole Miller.

While Miller recognizes that their name is tongue-in-cheek, he says the message about surviving if someone became stranded is very real.

"Of course we're the Zombie Apocalypse store and it's fun to take it to that level," Miller said. "But we're really about the practical, about the every day."

Miller says someone looking for survival tools should start with the basics. "Food, water, first aid and some sort of multi-tasking tool that can double as self-defense," he said.

They have other tools such as a solar-powered flashlight that also can charge a cell phone. Miller says something like that is another useful tool if someone became stranded.

While a three-day survival kit could mean the difference in getting out alive, he says it is critical to have a kit in your car and at your house.

"It's not saying that you need to survive an apocalypse or the collapse of society, it's just saying that you can get by until help arrives," Miller said.
