Man indicted in 2012 crash that killed expecting mother, unborn child

SOUTHGATE, KY (FOX19) - A 29-year-old man has been indicted following a fatal accident in 2012 that killed an expecting mother and her unborn child.

Erik Dixon, of Tollesboro, was indicted on Wednesday. The charges stem from the Southgate Police Department's investigation of an accident on July 12, 2012 that killed 25-year-old Lori Howe of Southgate. Howe was 26 weeks pregnant at the time of the crash. Her unborn child was also killed in the accident.

The accident occurred at the 0.8 mile marker on southbound I-471, near the entrance to 275 east. The crash injured seven other people.

According to Southgate Police, Dixon was driving a passenger van carrying six people when he lost control and crossed the grass median, hitting a Mazda car driving southbound. The Mazda then hit a Plymouth car also heading south.

The van eventually hit a guardrail, throwing four people out of the vehicle who were not wearing seatbelts.

Dixon has been charged with second degree manslaughter and third degree fetal homicide.
