Simon Kenton HS tightens security

KENTON COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -

For the students at Simon Kenton High, a tightened emphasis on safety and security will be put in place this year.

"We want them to be as prepared as possible for whatever may come their way," said principal Martha Setters.

She says students at Simon Kenton know all about ALICE. "What Alice is is a program designed to give us more options in case an intruder is inside our building," said Teal Nally, the district's safety coordinator.

  • Total compliant schools: 4,266
  • Total non-compliant schools: 162
  • Schools with safety plans 3 or more years old: 97
  • Schools missing both a safety and floor plan: 33
  • Schools missing only a safety plan: 11
  • Schools missing only a floor plan: 25

ALICE stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate. "What we've done is empower the students and our staff to do something that will improve their chances of surviving such and event," said Nally.

Each school in Kenton County also has more security cameras than ever, so many that almost every section of each school building is under a watchful eye. Each door is also locked, and its harder than every to get into the school buildings. Administrators hope it helps their students.

"If there is something you can do, do it. If you can get out, get out. If you need to barricade, barricade. If you need to take counter measures, do it. Don't just sit and wait for trouble to come to you," said Setters.
