Truck driver charged with vehicular homicide

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A Springfield, Ohio truck driver has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with a Sept. 29 fatal accident on northbound Interstate 75 just north of Interstate 74.

Jason Woodyard, 41, faces two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of vehicular manslaughter in Hamilton County Municipal Court. He will arraigned this afternoon.

Authorities say that Ashley Kelly, 22, was driving northbound on the highway when she lost control and struck the barrier. A second vehicle, driven by 21-year-old James Harrison, stopped to avoid colliding with Kelly's vehicle.

An oncoming semi truck driven by Woodyard was unable to stop in time and crashed into both vehicles. The accident happened in a construction zone and Woodyard was speeding, according to court documents.

Police say that Harrison was ejected from his vehicle following the collision. Harrison was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Harrison's passenger, 21-year-old Zachary Byrd, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers say that Kelly was also transported to the hospital following the collision.

The vehicular homicide charges are first degree misdemeanors punishable by a maximum of 180 days in jail. The vehicular manslaughter is a second degree misdemeanor. punishable by a maximum of 90 days in jail.
