6 arrested in Butler Co. immigrant protest

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

Butler County Sheriffs have arrested six individuals for disorderly conduct following a protest on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, members of ‘United We Dream,' an immigrant youth-lead organization, held a planned demonstration at the Sheriff's Office. Officers say that the goal of the protest was to shut down the Butler County Detention facility in protest of current immigration policies.

During the protest by approximately 50 young adult, six of them chained themselves to the public access doors. Police say that they warned the protestors to stop their actions or face arrest. Authorities say that the protestors ignored police warning.

Six individuals were taken into custody, arrested for disorderly conduct. They were escorted into the Butler County Jail for processing.

"Chaining yourself to the doors of the jail is probably the quickest way I know of to get an up-close and personal view of the non-public and very secure areas inside our facility," explains Sheriff Jones.

Those arrested include:

  • Oliver Merino-Morales, 24, of Wingate, N.C.
  • Luis Aguilar-Garcia, 18, of Boonville, N.C.
  • Parth Thaker, 22, of Charlotte, N.C.
  • Yash Mori, 18, of Charlotte N.C.
  • Lizette Diaz, 22, of Yadkinville, N.C.
  • Maura Pereira, 18, of Cooleemee, N.C.

The disorderly conduct charges will be handled through the Hamilton Municipal Court. Officers say it is anticipated that all will be released on an own recognizance bond.
