Don't throw them away, Owensboro can use your Christmas trees

The City of Owensboro says don't throw away your tree after Christmas. They can use it.

The Sanitation Department in Owensboro will soon be collecting natural Christmas trees. The city wants you to remove all lights and decorations before leaving the tree at the curb.

Officials say they will give the trees to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, and they'll sink the trees in lakes and ponds around the state to use them as fish hatcheries.

The city says it benefits wildlife and keeps the trees out of the county landfill.

"We basically open up a venue for them to dispose of their Christmas trees and still get a lot of use out of them even though they've already been used for Christmas. Now we can still use them in a beneficial manner," said Downy Ward, the sanitation manager with the City of Owensboro.

The Owensboro Sanitation Department will be closed New Year's Day. Crews will begin collecting Christmas trees January 2nd through the 7th.
