Holidays expected to increase household waste by 25%

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Holiday gatherings, gift packaging and wrapping significantly increase the amount of waste a home produces. Rumpke recycling expects to see a 25% increase in the amount of waste and recycling placed at the curb this time of year.

While many holiday items can be recycled, many can damage recycling equipment or contaminate materials used by manufacturers to make new things. Rumpke says those who recycle can stay off Santa's naughty list by reusing, donating, or discarding the following items rather than putting them in recycling bins:

  • Ribbons and bows
  • Foil and plastic wrap
  • Electronics
  • Christmas lights
  • Packing peanuts and bubble wrap
  • Plastic shopping bags
  • Decor (wreaths, garland, etc)
  • Blister or clam oil shell packaging
  • Batteries
