HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - A 20-year-old man has died as the result of injuries sustained in an accident early New Year's Day in Hamilton.
Emergency crews responded around 4:50 a.m. on New Year's Day to an investigate an accident on Washington Boulevard, just south of Woodview Lane.
Officers found a 1998 Ford Mustang had struck a large stone sign that identified the entrance to Millikin Woods park. The sign was in the roadway median.
The driver, identified as Aaron Jones, of Hamilton, had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was flown to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he had to undergo surgery for extensive injuries.
Jones' Mustang was the only vehicle involved, and no one else was in the car with him at the time of the crash.
The initial investigation showed that excessive speed was the primary cause of accident, according to Hamilton Police Sgt. Ed Buns. It was unknown if alcohol or drugs played a part. Police said that aspect of the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities say that Jones died on Friday as a result of his injuries.
Accident investigators continue to look into all events leading up to the crash.
