MASON, OH (FOX19) - A frozen pipe burst has caused a partial ceiling collapse at Mason Community Center.
The leak happened in the fitness center and a portion collapsed around 11:30 a.m. The building is located on S. Mason Montgomery Road next to Mason High School.
The building was evacuated and no one was hurt. However, a busted pipe in the sprinkler system caused heavy damage.
"Just a little bit of water had come out of the fire hoses and I think because of that, the water came onto the ceiling and it just all kind of collapsed down," explains Kelly Burchett of the Mason Community Center.
Mason Fire Chief John Moore says he and his crew helped clean up the mess. He says fire crews expect to respond to more businesses and homes with busted pipes in the coming days.
"Be aware of the plumbing that you have near outside walls," says Moore. "Anything that's on an outside wall, open up the cabinets, just make sure that it's not getting insulated against the warm air so that the pipes bust."
Mason Community Center will open Wednesday morning at 5 a.m. for normal operations. Some exercise equipment will be relocated until repairs are finished.
