Facing charges, Aurora police chief to resign

AURORA, IN (FOX19) -

Aurora Police Chief Bryan Fields, who is facing criminal charges, will resign effective Friday.

Fields was charged with one count of domestic battery and two counts of battery resulting in bodily injury. All are class A misdemeanors that are punishable by a maximum of a year in prison.

"Given recent developments, I feel that I need to take time to concentrate on my family," he wrote in resignation letter to the city's mayor, Board of Works and council. "It has been a privilege to serve the city of Aurora for the past 16 years and my decision to resign was not made lightly."

Authorities responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at Fields' home around 4 a.m. Dec. 15. Fields and his wife Holly, 42, were engaged in a physical confrontation when officers arrived. Holly Fields was transported to Dearborn County Hospital.

Fields was arraigned Dec. 17 in Dearborn County Superior Court 1. He was released from the Dearborn County jail the same day on a $500 bond.

A special prosecutor -- Ripley County Prosecutor Richard Hertel -- is handling the case.

A pre-trial hearing is Jan. 30. A bench trial is scheduled for March 4.
