A quick court appearance Wednesday for
the man accused of shooting at police during a 19-hour
standoff in Latonia the weekend before Christmas. Michael Vaughan spent
just 35 seconds in court.
Vaughan told the judge he was waiving his right to a
preliminary hearing, where the initial evidence against him would've been
discussed in open court.
That wasn't a surprise to the prosecution.
"It's pretty clear that the commonwealth would be able to
make the standard of probable cause to get it before the grand jury," said
James Redwine, the First Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in Kenton County.
"And it avoids having, I guess, salacious details (put) into the press."
Redwine said the case will now automatically go to the grand
jury. Prosecutors have 60 days to present it to them. Members of the grand jury
will then decide behind-closed-doors whether there's enough evidence against
Vaughan to indict him and send the case to trial.
Vaughan is charged with attempted murder of a police
officer. He pleaded
not guilty in a court appearance last week.
