(POOL/CNN) -Most Americans believe Congress should extend long-term unemployment benefits, according to a new Quinnipiac University survey.

The poll found 58 percent of registered voters said they supported a three month extension of the benefits.

The poll indicates a partisan divide, with 83 percent of Democrats and 54 percent of Independents supporting an extension.

Fifty-four percent of Republicans polled opposed the extension.

Legislation to extend the jobless benefits cleared a hurdle in the Senate earlier this week with the help of some Republicans.

But it could face further trouble if Democrats and Republicans can't agree on how to pay for the bill.
