Ohio is site of first video-game music conference

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - A first of its kind conference on video-game music is taking place later this month at Youngstown State University.

The conference Jan. 18 and 19 at the McDonough Museum of Art on the university's campus will include presentations and papers from scholars around the world on topics relating to music produced for video games.

Steven Reale, assistant professor in Youngstown State's Dana School of Music and lead organizer of the event, tells The Vindicator (http://bit.ly/1bYJt1Z ) that the study of video-game music is emerging as a legitimate academic discipline.

Reale says the conference will focus "on how soundtracks for various video games serve to heighten the game's story, amplify its interactivity, position it culturally or serve as touchstones for music pedagogy."
