Deandre Kelley shot and killed his 11-year-old daughter today after a domestic dispute with the girl's mother, Kristina Lanza.
This was not the first domestic incident between Kelley and Lanza. Kelley has charges from 2004 and 2007 of domestic violence against Lanza, but the charges were both dropped.
Victoria Hines, founder of the domestic abuse victim advocate organization She's Healed, says it is not unusual for victims to stay in abusive relationships.
"To turn that person in then leads them to fend for themselves... so for the sake of maintaining stability for themselves and their children they'll tolerate and endure the abuse," Hines explained.
There are resources for victims of domestic abuse to break out of the cycle. Counseling, emergency shelters and Hines' organization all offer support for those in need.
