Water Works: Chemical has passed through Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Greater Cincinnati Water Works and the Northern Kentucky Water District will reopen intake valves on Thursday after water quality samples indicated the spill from West Virginia had completely passed through the area.

The leak happened Jan. 9 in the Elk River near Charleston, West Virginia, where thousands of residents went days without using or drinking tap water. The chemical, identified as 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, traveled approximately 265 miles to reach the Tri-State area and was first detected around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials said it's typically used in the coal industry and puts off a strong odor much like licorice.

Both Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky water systems shut down their intake valves on Tuesday evening to prevent the contamination from getting into the Tri-State's water treatment system.

Water Works officials said it was not detectable in Ohio River samples since 4 a.m. Thursday. Normal operations will begin at approximately 2 p.m.
