Couple rescued from Milford pond after attempting to save dogs

MILFORD, OH (FOX19) -

A couple was rescued from a Milford pond on Monday evening after jumping into the icy waters in an attempt to save their dogs.

Police were called to the 5400 block of Mt. Zion Road around 5:30 p.m. on Monday evening. Crews arriving on the scene say that a husband and wife had jumped into the frigid waters in an attempt to save their three Irish Setters from drowning.

The dogs apparently fell through the pond's thinning ice.

Officers say that the couple attempted to use a small boat to rescue the dogs from the freezing water.

Police say that the couple was able to save one of the three dogs from the water. However, officers state that two of the Irish Setters perished.

Authorities were called to the scene to rescue the couple involved in the rescue attempt. Both divers and boat teams were called to the scene.

Police say the couple was treated for hypothermia and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

FOX19 will continue to update the story as details become available.
