Perfect North Slopes hosts Special Olympics today

(FOX19) - Special Olympians are hitting the slopes at Perfect North for the Kentucky State Winter Olympic Games today.

All the events that were scheduled for the next two days are happening today to get those athletes out of the cold weather.

Mark Buerger tells FOX19,"Our first goal is always the safety of our athletes and of our volunteers, too. We can't have volunteers just be out manning the ski courses all day in that kind of cold so we've moved all of the skiing events to today so we'll do time trials in the morning, competitions in the afternoon."

Buerger also tells FOX19 that they will come back tomorrow to do the awards for all the participants. They also have a fund dinner and dance that takes place tonight.

This is the 17th year that Perfect North Slopes has hosted the Special Olympics. They will be performing down hill skiing, short hill skiing as well as some snow shoeing.
