600+ wrecks in 24 hours in Mecklenburg Co, black ice concern

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

As officials warn of potential for black ice overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, county officials revealed that officers responded to more than 600 wrecks in less than 24 hours.

City officials say there have been more than 600 accidents across Mecklenburg County since the storm hit Tuesday afternoon.

The new comes as Charlotte-Mecklenburg School officials announced they will be closed for students on Thursday.

"While major thoroughfares are clear, many neighborhoods remain unsafe for school buses," officials said. "City and county transportation staff will work throughout the evening and morning to clear secondary roads."

The roads were expected to start refreezing on Wednesday evening, city officials say.

"As we enter the evening hours, the temperature across the state will quickly drop into the single digits. As a result, roadways will become extremely treacherous and possibly impassable," said Colonel Bill Grey, commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

"Black ice can be one of the most dangerous conditions as a result of winter weather and is almost invisible. We are asking `motorists not to drive unless absolutely necessary."

"All major and minor thoroughfares, major and minor arterial streets, and major and minor collector streets, which include bus routes are being treated with salt currently and will continue to be treated throughout day," the city said in its update.

These extreme cold temperatures hamper and slow down the effectiveness of the salt.

There could be isolated icy patches through Thursday morning rush hour so motorists are asked to take precautions.

Snow arrived in Charlotte around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and tapered off by midnight. The official measurement from the National Weather Service was one inch for Charlotte.

Temperatures are expected to jump about 10 degrees each day from Thursday (42) to Friday (50) into Saturday when we're close to 60 degrees!
