Animal control officers busy with frigid temperatures

KENTON COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -

The frigid temperatures aren't just dangerous for you. They're just as bad for your pets.

In an effort to make sure animals are safe during the sub-zero freezes the Tri-State has seen, animal control officers have been especially busy, which includes Kenton County.

Kenton County animal control officer, Jimmy Boling, responded to about eight calls related to animals outside in the freezing temperatures on Monday.

"Some people, they think that just because an animal has a fur coat on, that they're warm enough. From time to time, we do find animals that are froze to death," said Boling.

When officers like Boling respond to a call, they're looking to make sure animals have adequate shelter and necessities.

On Monday afternoon, Bowling was called to a Taylor Mill home to check on concerns of a dog's well-being and alleged lack of shelter on that visit. The claims were unfounded, and the dog had plenty of shelter.

"We do our best to educate people along the way," Boling told FOX19.

Education is key in keeping your pets safe in the harsh winter weather. Of Boling's calls on Monday, he seized zero pets. However, if an owner is not home and the animal has inadequate shelter, Bowling says they will seize it.

"We don't want to take their animals. What we want to do is educate them, and make sure that they're not in danger of dying in this condition," said Dan Evans, director of the Kenton County Animal Shelter.

Despite the frigid cold and even more bitter temperatures set for Tuesday, Evans says the Kenton County Animal Shelter took more than double the amount of calls they normally take in a day. Many of them were related to an animal's well-being.

"If we layer, we're still going to be cold out there. Exposure is exposure and they will suffer from these things. We need to make sure that we get them into somewhere that's warm," said Evans.

Evans says that in Kenton County, if the National Weather Service issues advisories and warnings about extreme temperatures, you're required to bring your animal inside. Check county ordinances where you live to see what requirements there are in your area.
