Sentimental messages for mom float into Mesa backyard

A Mesa family had an unusual sighting above their home Sunday night.

What looked like a floating fireball landed on their backyard wall, near Broadway Road and Val Vista Drive, at about 9:30 p.m. after floating in from the east.

"It started coming closer and I was like, I hope it's not an airplane on fire," said Laura Hoover as she recalled watching it in the sky. "I'm like - that would be horrible."

Prior to it landing, her sons thought the orange glow might be a meteor.

But it turned out to be a floating paper lantern with three notes attached.

One piece of paper simply had squiggly lines on it.

"This one here must be from a little baby that probably can't write," Hoover guessed.

The second note said, "I love you mom. I hope you get better soon."

The third note read, "Please come back to us. We miss you and love you."

The sweet sentiments nearly brought Hoover to tears.

"I could've cried, really," she said. "That's a very emotional thing. And I'm sure it's hard for those little children."

Hoover wants the mystery family who sent the lantern up for their mother to know her prayers are with them.

"I hope she's doing better," she said. "I hope she gets home with her family. They miss her, love her - and I wish them all the best."

As sweet and heartfelt as the gesture is, the Mesa Fire Department points out sending up lighted, paper lanterns is illegal in the city - because of their potential to start a fire.
