The Falcon Warbirds are a formation flying group based at Mesa's Falcon Field. They'll be one of the opening acts for the Waste Management Phoenix Open around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
"We're going to be doing a diamond fly-by first, and then we'll come back around and to honor the veterans, we'll do a missing man formation," said Brig. Gen. Dick Stich with Falcon Warbirds.
The Warbirds tell us the primary focus of their group is to generate interest in aviation, as well as recognize our vets.
"The military will no longer do flyovers for deceased vets, so we've taken that job up and we're proud to do that," said Stich.
The Warbirds gave CBS 5 News a preview of tomorrow's flight from the cockpit.
"It takes a lot of trust to do formation flight together because everybody needs to know what they're doing since you're in close quarters. It's what general aviation pilots are taught not to do," said Scott Andrews with Falcon Warbirds.
Such as flying extremely close and communicating with hand signals. Even rocking the wings means something.
"It takes quite a lot of training. Hours and hours are spent with people riding in your airplane with you and other people operating their aircraft for you to fly alongside of," added Andrews.
The Falcon Warbirds occupy one of the original hangars at Falcon Field where U.S. Army Air Corps, British Royal Air Force, and Chinese pilots were trained during World War II.
"We're so honored to have a Warbirds squadron - there's only about 10 or 12 in the whole U.S., none of them have a facility like we do," said Stich.
The public is invited to see these aircraft, and others, at Falcon Field's Open House on March 29.
